Market Close: Stock Rally Fades, Job Growth Weakens, Strong Earnings Boost Eli Lilly 8-5-2026

I'm Peter Shaknau, CNBC. An early rally faded on Wall Street, but the stock market still managed to set a few records during the Wednesday session. The Dow gained 263 points to close at 54,349.That is a record high. The S&P 500 lost 13 points or 210 of a percent, but did set a record intraday high earlier in the session.
