Core Viewpoint - The first undersea cable project in the Beibu Gulf, the 220 kV undersea interconnection project for Weizhou Island, has officially commenced, marking a significant advancement in domestic energy infrastructure and technology [1][3]. Group 1: Project Overview - The project is initiated by the Southern Power Grid Guangxi Electric Power Company with a total investment of approximately 858 million yuan [3]. - The undersea cable will stretch 44.8 kilometers from the Beihai 220 kV Duhai Substation to the 220 kV Weizhou Substation, with the cable being the first domestically produced 220 kV undersea cable using indigenous insulation materials [1][3]. - The construction of the undersea cable is expected to take 15 days, with the project scheduled for acceptance and operation by mid-January 2026 [3]. Group 2: Technical Innovations - The undersea cable has been developed through collaboration among the Southern Power Grid Scientific Research Institute, Guangxi Electric Power Company, Zhejiang Wanma Polymer Materials Group, and Jiangsu Hengtong High Voltage Cable Co., Ltd., achieving significant breakthroughs in domestic cable insulation technology [3]. - The project will end the "isolated network operation" of Weizhou Island, allowing for 24-hour access to the mainland power grid and addressing the island's insufficient public power supply [3]. Group 3: Environmental Impact - Upon completion, the power supply capacity on Weizhou Island will increase from 35,000 kW to 161,000 kW, which is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 4,318 tons annually based on gas-fired power generation carbon emissions calculations [3]. - The project will also facilitate the integration of offshore wind power in the vicinity, establishing a crucial transmission channel for future offshore wind energy development in the Beibu Gulf [3].
