RT Nick Szabo (@NickSzabo4)The technology Iran with their proxy the Houthis experimented widely with and perfected at the Bab-Al-Mandeb gives Iran, from its very long north shore, and hundreds of thousands of square miles dotted with tunnels and caves, irrevocable veto power over commercial shipping in the Gulf and Hormuz.Neither the U.S. nor anyway else can stop this. The best the U.S. can do is establish a parallel veto power from the south shore. The actual rules for navigating Hormuz will have to be a co ...

RT Nick Szabo (@NickSzabo4)The best the U.S. can accomplish is to exercise a second veto power over commercial shipping in the Gulf and Hormuz from the south shore. Iran would still exercise its military veto power from the north shore.Perhaps that is a high stakes standoff, but commercial pressures are likely to regularize it into a set of compromise rules. ...

RT Nick Szabo (@NickSzabo4)A closed strait is not what gives Iran leverage.Their military veto power over commercial shipping through the strait is what gives them leverage. And they are certainly not going to give that up. Nor does any armed force in the world any longer have the ability to take away such a veto power. The military technology and tactics that give Iran this power were aptly demonstrated by their proxy the Houthis at the Bab-El-Mandeb a year ago.Iran is happy to open up the Strait of Hormuz ...

Taking the Persian Gulf islands and raiding many parts of the very long Iranian shoreline, at the cost of thousands to tens of thousands of American servicemen lives, also would not eliminate Iran's veto power over commercial shipping at Hormuz. That veto power comes from hundreds of thousands of square miles of Afghan-like terrain dotted with tunnels and caves. These 21st century presidios can be replenished by an endless stream of missiles and drones, assembled from an endless stream of Chinese parts, whic ...

RT Nick Szabo (@NickSzabo4)India and China would have greatly preferred that the U.S. hadn't fucked up the Persian Gulf by attacking a nation that can establish, and now has established, irrevocable veto power over commercial shipping through Hormuz. But since we did, they now have to make the best of the situation they can. The most effective way for them to restore their shipping through Hormuz is to ally with that veto power so that it vetoes ships of the U.S. and its allies, rather than those of China o ...

RT Nick Szabo (@NickSzabo4)It also doesn't matter much if Iran loses these islands. They will still have veto power over commercial shipping at Hormuz. That control comes not from the islands, but from hundreds of thousands of square miles in which to hide caves and tunnels full of drones and missiles, made from endless Chinese-supplied parts. ...
Trump calls on other nations to help secure the Strait of Hormuz
NBC News· 2026-03-16 18:03
We are aggressively dismantling Iran's defense industrial base and ability to rebuild its missiles and drone capability is getting down to close to zero. And we're hammering their capacity to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormos with more than 30 mine laying ships destroyed. We strongly encourage other nations whose economies depend on the strait far more than ours.We want them to come and help us with the straight. ...
