Energy Swaraj: Powering Future | Dr. Chetan Solanki | TEDxNavrachana International School Vadodara
TEDx Talks· 2025-09-15 15:17
Environmental Impact & Awareness - The annual per capita garbage creation in India is 125 kg per person per year, while the world average is 270 kg, and America is 950 kg per person per year [6] - The garbage thrown into the atmosphere is 25 tons per person per year globally, 54 tons per person per year in India, and 12 to 13 tons per person per year in developed countries like America [14] - There is 53% extra greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, leading to a warmer planet [20][21] - The planet's temperature has already increased by 25° Fahrenheit, indicating the planet has a fever and lost balance [27] Energy Consumption & Sources - 80% to 85% of energy used comes from coal, oil, and gas, all of which are carbon-based [18][19] - Burning carbon results in carbon dioxide emissions, which are released into the atmosphere [19] Climate Change Thresholds & Consequences - At 15° centigrade of global warming, climate change will start to become irreversible, and at 2° centigrade, it will be completely irreversible [23] - By the end of the century (2100), the global temperature will rise to a minimum of 3° and up to 6° centigrade [24] Responsibility & Action - Every individual is part of the climate change problem, and therefore, every individual is responsible for correcting it [30][31]
Michael Mann & Peter Hotez on the "organized," "deliberate" political attacks on science
MSNBC· 2025-09-13 18:43
Threats to Science and Public Health - Scientists like Michael Man and Peter Hotz face organized attacks from climate deniers and vaccine skeptics, sometimes sanctioned by government officials [1][2] - These attacks aim to undermine public faith in science, which is crucial for addressing climate change, pandemics, and other crises [2][14] - Misinformation and disinformation, amplified by social media and AI, pose a significant threat to tackling global challenges [22] The Anti-Science Movement - Five forces drive the anti-science movement: propagandists, bureaucrats, and others who weaponize platforms to spread misinformation [14] - Organized misinformation led to an estimated 200,000 American deaths due to vaccine refusal [10][11] - Financial incentives, such as selling low-cost generics at inflated prices, motivate some to discredit science and scientists [11][12] Defending Science - Science relies on peer review, scientific meetings, and other established processes to refine and validate research [17][18][23] - Engaging with bad faith actors who reject scientific evidence is unproductive [18] - Media's "performative neutrality" or "false objectivity" can give undue weight to unscientific viewpoints [20][21]

Why humanity's fate depends on regenerative food | Oliver English | TEDxPacific Avenue
TEDx Talks· 2025-08-05 15:58
[Applause] Food is one of the most beautiful parts of our life and one of the most powerful vehicles for change in our world. But we find ourselves at a fundamental turning point in human history, a fork in the road. And we have two options to pursue with regards to how we grow our food, what we grow, and the systems we grow our food within. Here's our choice. Option one is to continue with the current industrialized food system. In this system, we tear down all the trees. We grow one type of crop as far as t ...

'Nothing but badness for human health': Doctor slams EPA's move on greenhouse gas
MSNBC· 2025-07-30 12:20
Regulatory Changes & Policy Impact - EPA is planning to repeal the 2009 endangerment finding, which declared greenhouse gases a threat to public health, reversing climate change policy [1] - The 2009 declaration has served as the basis for climate regulations, such as limiting emissions from cars and power plants [1] - The EPA administration is calling the rollback the largest deregulatory action in US history [2] - The Supreme Court directed the EPA to determine if greenhouse gases are harmful to human health, leading to the endangerment finding [4] - The endangerment finding was codified into law, requiring the EPA to regulate greenhouse gas emissions [5] - Repealing the endangerment finding removes the underlying reason to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from power plants [14] Health & Environmental Concerns - Increased ER visits are observed due to coughing from wildfire smoke exposure and prolonged traffic exposure [7] - Deaths from extreme heat have reached unprecedented levels, and air pollution is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide [8] - Without regulations, gas-emitting vehicles will no longer be held to emission standards, negatively impacting human health [9] - Removing greenhouse gas regulations will accelerate the impact of climate change [10] Vehicle Emission Standards - Newer generations of combustion engine vehicles are subject to health standards due to greenhouse gases being historically viewed as harmful [12] - Without limits, car makers may face increased costs to adhere to new emissions standards, but there are downstream benefits for the planet and health [12][13]
