‘How is this even legal?’: Experts react to shocking new ICE memo
MSNBC· 2025-07-13 16:32
Immigration Policy & Enforcement - ICE officials privately react to unrealistic demands from Trump's top immigration advisor, Steven Miller, regarding arrest numbers [1] - Miller's focus on daily arrest numbers is allegedly forcing agents to abandon serious criminal cases, leading to low morale [1][2] - A Gallup poll indicates that only 35% of the American public approves of Trump's immigration policy, with only 28% approval among independents [4] - A new ICE memo allegedly allows the agency to deport migrants with as little as six hours' notice without confirming their safety from persecution or torture [5][6] Political & Social Impact - Critics describe conditions at an internment camp as appalling, with 32 detainees per cage [3] - The administration's strategy is perceived as a deterrence tactic to encourage self-deportation due to fear [8] - The administration has not been able to meet the goal of deporting 3,000 people a day [9] - Some believe the administration is targeting a political "other" rather than focusing on criminals [19][20] Economic Considerations - Immigrants are considered a vital part of the economy and culture [16][17] - Undocumented deportations are reportedly down, and violent crime is at historic lows [17] - Immigrants contribute to the economy by paying taxes, even without receiving earned benefits [23]

MSNBC· 2025-07-11 04:33
They can do that to anyone. I for one wasn't sure that that was true the first time I heard that statement.Surely that couldn't happen to someone who was in the United States legally. But then it did. And then I said that it could happen to anyone.I never would have thought that it would h ...
