Brain Computer Interface (BCI) Technology & Spinal Cord Injuries - The University of Chicago is conducting a study using Brain Computer Interface (BCI) technology to help people with spinal cord injuries, collaborating with the University of Pittsburgh and Northwestern University [1] - The goal of the study is to restore motor control and sensation to people with spinal cord injuries who have lost function of a hand or limb, with the hope of restoring independence [1] - BCI technology allows a participant to control a robotic arm and hand merely by thinking about it, with sensory feedback enabling the user to feel and sense the correct force needed to pick up objects [1] Impact & Statistics - In the US, there are 180,000 people with tetraplegia and 58,000 people with major arm amputations [3] - As of the time of the report, only 670 people have flown into outer space, while only 70 people have had electrodes implanted on their brains for things like speech, vision, and motor control [4] - Only 10 people have both motor control with sensory feedback via brain implants, highlighting the rarity and advancement of the technology [4] Funding & Purpose - The brain computer interface study was funded through the Department of Defense back in 2005 [4] - The goal of the funding was to help veterans of war who may have lost a hand, limb, or become quadriplegic [4] - BCI technology offers the possibility for people with limitations to operate computers and control devices, instilling a renewed belief and independence [4]

For Sonya Mughal, the third and current CEO of the 56-year-old Foster City, California firm, Bailard's philosophy — one centered on independence, accountability and excellence — underpins every policy and benefit the firm provides. ...

Social Well-being & Mental Health - Modern Western society's emphasis on independence contributes to burnout, with half of workers reporting burnout [2] - Loneliness is a public health crisis, with health risks equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day [3] - Strong social ties are linked to longer, healthier, and happier lives, indicating community is essential [7] Interdependence & Community - Interdependence is presented as a solution to the limitations of independence, emphasizing shared resources and skills [6] - Building a "web of care" involves both giving and receiving, fostering generosity and humility [6][7] - True maturity is defined as connection and mutual relationships, not separation [7] Community Building Strategies - Three community-building skills are highlighted: presence, purpose, and prioritization [8] - Presence involves paying attention to local surroundings and engaging with others [8] - Purpose entails intentional gatherings and clear communication, including asking for help [8] - Prioritization means valuing people over productivity and making time for relationships [8] Technology & Connection - Active online engagement (video calls, meaningful chats) can strengthen bonds, while passive scrolling can intensify loneliness [8] - The focus should be on real-world connections rather than technological conveniences that promote isolation [8]

[Applause] I want you all to think about what you were doing at 18. Learning to drive, planning that holiday to Magalof with your mates, falling in love. At 18, my patient was told they had just months to live.and that they'd never walk again. Cancer had crept from their lungs to their bones and into their spine, stealing their movement and bodily functions inch by inch. The unspoken message was clear.Stay in bed. Keep comfortable. This is the beginning of the end.But that's not what happened. They stood. T ...

Identity Development & Individuality - Twins often experience challenges in forming independent identities compared to singletons, as highlighted by a 2025 survey and a 2021 article [9][10] - Identity is shaped by choices, experiences, values, and boundaries, leading to different individual stories even with the same starting point [22][25] - Close bonds can blur individual identities, emphasizing the importance of clarity within closeness rather than choosing distance [29] Overcoming Challenges & Achieving Individuality - Separating twins into different classes facilitated the development of individual voices and perspectives [11][12] - Focusing on personal progress rather than comparison with a twin fosters individual growth and self-recognition [20][21] - Intentional meetups and diverse environments enhance understanding and collaboration, multiplying individual strengths [32][33][34] Educational Environment & Support - The school's structure, with separate classes, feedback, and assessments, supported the twins' individual growth [30][31] - A diverse environment promotes interaction with people from various backgrounds, fostering new problem-solving strategies [32][33] - The school provided the support and guidance necessary for the twins to find themselves and author their own identities [37]
