Gender Equality Status & Trends - The world is at 685% gender parity in 2024, a slow progress from 645% in 2006, projecting full parity by 2155 [3][4] - The UN's Agenda 2030 goal for gender equality is projected to be missed by 125 years [5] - Italy ranks 87th out of 146 countries in gender equality [6] Italian Gender Equality Specifics - Italy excels in educational attainment with women having 23 percentage points more university education than men [6][7] - Italy lags in labor force participation, ranking 111th, with 17 percentage points fewer women entering and remaining in the workforce and 26 percentage points less in income due to more part-time work [7] - Only 54% of Italian women are employed, compared to the European average of 66%, representing a potential loss of 2 million jobs and 4-5 percentage points of GDP [7][8] - Italy has a higher percentage of women in leadership positions (43% in listed and public company boards) compared to the European average of 39%, thanks to the Golfo Mosca law [12] - Italy has a strong representation of women in parliament (40% in the European Parliament and 33% in the Italian Parliament) due to gender preference voting laws [13] Key Areas for Improvement in Italy - The need for family support services like childcare, elder care, and full-time schooling to enable women's participation in the workforce [14][15] - Addressing the unequal distribution of unpaid family work, with women dedicating 20% of their time compared to men's 8% [15] - The importance of women's economic independence to escape domestic violence, noting that 70% of domestic violence victims are not financially independent and 30% of Italian women do not have their own bank account [16]
