Core Viewpoint - Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, stated that the original vision centered around rollups is no longer applicable and a new approach is needed due to slow progress of Layer 2 (L2) towards Stage 2 and the direct expansion of Layer 1 (L1) [1] Group 1 - The original vision viewed L2 as "brand sharding" providing full credit expansion, but L2 is either unwilling or unable to meet this due to regulatory demands, while L1 has expanded directly [1] - It is suggested to view L2 as a spectrum, allowing users to choose different levels of connectivity based on their needs [1] - L2 should seek unique value beyond expansion, such as privacy, non-EVM VMs, extreme scalability, ultra-low latency, and built-in oracles, while processing ETH assets to at least Stage 1 to maximize interoperability [1] Group 2 - Support for native rollup precompiled contracts is recommended, utilizing built-in ZK-EVM to achieve EVM verification and composability without a security council [1] - L2 should be allowed to self-certify additional features and clearly inform users about security guarantees [1]
