Headphone Microphone Testing - The Vergecast conducted microphone tests on over-ear headphones, including Nothing Headphone 1 ($299), Sony WH-1000XM6s ($449), AirPods Max ($549), and Bose Quiet Comfort Ultra [1][2] - Sony WH-1000XM6s were rated as the top pick for voice calls due to clear voice quality and effective background noise cancellation [2][3] - Nothing Headphone 1 was ranked second, offering good noise cancellation but with some voice compression [1][3] - AirPods Max were noted to let in more ambient noise and produced a thinner voice quality, ranking them last for voice calls [2][3] - Bose Quiet Comfort Ultra exhibited an echoey voice quality and inconsistent noise handling, placing them third [3] Strength Training App (Ladder) - Ladder aims to replicate personal training experience through programming, coaching, and accountability, making strength training accessible [3][4] - Ladder uses a matching algorithm to connect users with suitable programs and coaches based on fitness level, goals, and preferences [4] - Ladder emphasizes real coaching and proper form through movement videos and expert-designed progressive workouts [4] - Ladder's integration with Spotify and Apple Music, allowing users to listen to their own playlists, is a core value proposition [5][7] - Ladder uses AI to amplify the work of its coaches, helping them manage team chats and personalize the experience [7][16] - Ladder is exploring nutrition integration and using AI to provide personalized recommendations based on user data [16] AI Fitness Insights - AI fitness insights are seen as potentially beneficial for beginners who lack foundational fitness knowledge [19][21] - Companies offer AI summaries and chatbots, but the effectiveness varies, with some providing generic insights [22][23] - The value of AI lies in contextualizing data, but current AI fitness summaries often fall short of providing meaningful insights [28][32] - Companies acknowledge the need for AI in fitness but are still working on improving its accuracy and personalization [26][27]
Here's an update to our Nothing Headphone (1) review.
The Verge· 2025-07-07 17:30
I got to try Nothing's new headphone 1. Here's what I found after using them for a week. These do stick out from other Bluetooth headphones. They look cool here, but I think in person they might look a little cheesy with this plastic piece and rectangular shape. They are comfortable even after wearing all day. But the ear pads are not my favorite texture, and they aren't removable. The most interesting part to me is the controls. This roller wheel is for volume and pausing music. The paddle switch skips track ...
We took some sample photos with Project Indigo and the normal iPhone camera to see how they compare.
The Verge· 2025-07-05 14:01
Overview of Project Indigo - Project Indigo is an Adobe app designed to create images with a more natural, high-contrast look, contrasting with the typical washed-out photos from camera phones [1][2] - The app utilizes computational photography, merging multiple frames to reduce noise and enhance dynamic range [2][3] - The app's processing leans towards darker exposures, differing from the iPhone's tendency to brighten shadows [3] Performance and Trade-offs - Project Indigo is currently in beta, which results in it running hot and processing images slowly [4] - There is a risk of losing images if the user switches to the main camera app during processing [4] Availability and Future - The app is currently free for download and use, but its future pricing is uncertain [5]
Lorde’s new CD is so transparent that stereos can’t even read it.
The Verge· 2025-07-04 14:00
Product Issue - Lorde's Virgin album CD version, marketed as fully recyclable, faces playability issues on some CD players, particularly car stereos and portable devices [1] - Transparent disc design is suspected to interfere with laser-based CD detection mechanisms in certain players, especially slot-style players [3] - Xbox Series X also experiences compatibility issues with the transparent CD [2] Potential Solutions - A simple fix involves applying a sticker to the disc to block light transmission [4] Industry Perspective - Similar issues have been observed with transparent vinyl records and infrared track detection on RCA turntables [3] - The CD's collectibility and aesthetic appeal are noted despite playability concerns [4]
Congress passed the GOP's big spending bill, stripping away resources for renewable energy projects.
The Verge· 2025-07-03 20:19
Policy & Regulation Impact - The passage of a spending bill is expected to cut Medicaid and food assistance programs while increasing funding for deportation efforts [1] - The bill rolls back tax credits for wind, solar, energy efficiency, and electric vehicles that were part of a 2022 bill aimed at reducing US greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 40% by 2030 [2] - Republican districts that previously benefited from clean energy tax credits are now impacted by the cuts [5] Energy Market Dynamics - Efforts to boost fossil fuels and halt renewable energy projects may lead to increased pollution [3] - Wholesale electricity prices could potentially rise by 25% over five years due to reduced investment in wind and solar energy and increased reliance on gas-fired power plants [3] - Rising electricity demand driven by AI, domestic manufacturing, and electric vehicle adoption is occurring simultaneously with cuts to renewable energy incentives [4] Renewable Energy Sector - The reduction in incentives for renewable energy projects is considered unfavorable given the increasing electricity demand [4] - Gas-fired power plants, unlike solar and wind, incur fuel costs, making them a less economically stable option in the long term [4]
Has there ever been a more stylish power strip? #TITW
The Verge· 2025-07-03 17:12
I have too many handhelds to charge. So, today I'm toyed with the coolest looking power strip I've ever seen. This is the Genki Moon Base, $129 desktop power station with three glowing AC outlets and four USBC ports on the end.It comes in teal, too, with a dark gray housing. And each color is matching braided cords. You can make them glow in lots of different colors, too, with this touch sensitive spot around back. But how well does it actually charge. Well, it's not for your toaster, haird dryer, or the bee ...
The ultimate movie draft for the tech we’d love to take off the screen. #vergecast
The Verge· 2025-07-02 14:05
We're going to do a bit of a draft today. The five of us, we're going to pick five things each and it's going to be chaos and we're going to try to figure out what fictional tech do we want in our real lives. I'm going with the TARDIS from Doctor Who.Very good. Very good. My first pick is Capsules from Dragon Ball Z.I'm just going to take Jarvis from Iron Man. Oh, lost two already. Okay, just strategically, I think I need to grab the clueless closet.Surprised it took this long. I want kit. Okay, explain thr ...

Microsoft is saying hello to the Black Screen of Death error message instead. #vergecast
The Verge· 2025-06-29 14:01
Microsoft is killing the blue screen of death after 40 years when your computer explodes. It will no longer show the blue screen of death. It will show the black screen of death.A thing that I learned this week uh thanks to a story Tom Warren wrote for The Verge in 2014 uh was that Steve Balmer wrote the text of the blue screen of death message. No way. Because he got the blue screen of death and he thought the the wording didn't seem right for when it was going wrong. So he they the Windows team challenged ...
Now the T1 Phone 8002 is ‘designed with American values in mind,’ which is… different. #vergecast
The Verge· 2025-06-28 14:00
There's an update on the Trump phone. They've changed the website. Used to say made in the United States, now it says, "Designed with American values in mind, the T1 trademark delivers top tier performance, sleek design, and powerful features, all without the inflated price tag. Designed with American values in mind is what is replacing made in the USA. With American hands behind every device, we bring care, precision, and trusted quality to every detail." An American hand has clicked the AliExpress order b ...
