L’attimo decisivo: il cronista e il peso di una parola | Claudio Giambene | TEDxBassanoDelGrappa
TEDx Talks· 2025-09-29 16:42
Core Idea - The essence of a journalist's work lies in capturing a fleeting moment, balancing empathy and detachment to uncover the truth [1][2] - Curiosity is the cornerstone of journalism, acting as a defense against AI and automated content generation [5] - A news story is defined as the revelation of previously unknown information, representing the ultimate goal for journalists [6] Journalistic Approach - Building rapport and trust with sources, even through seemingly small gestures, is crucial for obtaining valuable information [10][14] - Empathetic engagement with individuals involved in a story can unlock crucial narratives and perspectives [14] - Sometimes, strategic manipulation of a subject's ego can be employed to initiate dialogue, followed by rigorous questioning [17][18] Illustrative Examples - A case in Traversetolo, Parma, highlights how a seemingly innocuous interaction with a neighbor led to a significant scoop regarding a hidden pregnancy and infanticide [7][10] - An encounter with the wife of a murder suspect in Bari demonstrates the power of empathy in eliciting a heartfelt account of the situation [12][14] - The Costa Concordia disaster exemplifies how a journalist's initial approach, even if manipulative, can pave the way for a critical interview [16][17]

“If we agree to that — we’re no longer reporters”: Pentagon media rules draw backlash
MSNBC· 2025-09-23 11:09
Freedom of the Press & Government Transparency - The new regulations at the Pentagon restrict reporters' ability to seek information, raising concerns about transparency and accountability [2] - The regulations could potentially prevent reporters from asking about sensitive information, such as the number of US troops in Syria [3] - There are concerns about how the new rules will be enforced and whether information obtained from other sources, like the State Department or senators, will be subject to the same restrictions [3] - The industry expects aggressive pushback from the press and news organizations against these rules [4] - There is a concern that if these restrictions are allowed at the Pentagon, other government agencies may follow suit [4] Government Response & Potential Reversal - The President expressed disagreement with the rule change, suggesting that it won't stop reporters [3] - The President did not explicitly instruct the Secretary to change the rules [4] - The industry hopes that the pushback will lead to a change in the rules and increased awareness of the importance of press freedom [4]
'Beyond comprehension': National security expert SLAMS new Pentagon 'pledge' journalists
MSNBC· 2025-09-21 01:37
The Trump administration is trying to make it even harder for reporters at the Pentagon to do their jobs of keeping us all aware of what the Defense Department is up to. NPR reports that going forward, journalists must sign a pledge not to gather any information, including unclassified reports, that has not been authorized for release. Those who fail to obey will lose their press credentials. Basically, don't do reporting. The National Press Club blasted the move, saying in a statement in part, quote, "This ...
