Core Idea of UDL - UDL aims to transform classrooms into more unique, inspiring, and engaging places for all learners by highlighting choice and agency [3] - UDL is an approach to learning that makes meaning accessible and flexible for all students, regardless of their strengths, needs, or cultural backgrounds [4] - UDL is grounded in neuroscience, cognitive psychology, disability studies, and asset-based inclusive pedagogy [4] Key Components of UDL - UDL focuses on three main areas of choice: engagement (why does this matter), action and expression (how to share what they know), and representation (what materials are provided) [5] - UDL emphasizes designing to the edges, intentionally creating products or experiences keeping in mind the needs of users at the extreme ends of the spectrum [10] - UDL encourages students to take ownership of their learning, set their own goals, and ask for the support that they need [23] Practical Applications of UDL - In a UDL classroom, teachers might use color-coding (e g, red for main ideas, blue for supporting details) to provide choices for students when taking notes [19] - UDL can be implemented by allowing students to choose leadership roles in group activities based on their strengths and interests [24][25] - UDL enhances belonging, autonomy, and agency in the classroom [26]
