Core Viewpoint - The Chinese government aims to enhance research and development in key technologies for nuclear power, focusing on innovation in materials, fuels, software, and processes to support high-quality development in the nuclear energy sector [1][3]. Summary by Sections Nuclear Power Development - China's nuclear power has progressed significantly over the past 40 years, with 58 operational nuclear reactors and a total installed capacity exceeding 60 million kilowatts. There are 44 reactors under construction, adding over 52 million kilowatts, bringing the total to approximately 113 million kilowatts. In 2024, the expected nuclear power generation is around 450 billion kilowatt-hours, equivalent to saving 140 million tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 370 million tons [1][2]. Safety and Quality Assurance - China has maintained a strong safety record in nuclear power for over 30 years, with no significant nuclear safety incidents. The country has consistently ranked first globally in the WANO comprehensive index for nine consecutive years, ensuring controlled nuclear safety [2]. Technological Innovation - The transition from second-generation to third-generation nuclear technology has been completed, with projects like "Hualong One" and "Guohe One" fully operational. The world's first fourth-generation nuclear technology demonstration project is set to begin commercial operation in December 2023, and a small modular reactor project is under construction, expected to be operational by 2026 [2][3]. Future Development Strategy - The government plans to actively promote coastal nuclear power construction while ensuring safety. There will be a focus on advanced nuclear technology demonstrations and the integration of nuclear energy for heating and comprehensive utilization. The strategy includes a balanced approach to development, ensuring the protection of site resources and fostering a coordinated development of the entire nuclear power industry chain [3]. International Cooperation - China will continue to promote equal, mutually beneficial, and cooperative relationships with other countries to address risks and challenges in the nuclear power sector, contributing to the sustainable development of global nuclear energy [4].
