[applause] [applause] I jolted awake, lifting my head off the crunchy plastic pillow covered by a pillowcase. Black and tan smudges of my makeup smearing the white fabric. My tears making a mess of someone who was supposed to have it all together.the room. It smelled of rubbing alcohol and vomit, and I tried to shield myself from the cold with just a small sheet. As the events from the night before seeped back into my memory, the most overwhelming sense of dread filled my being. What had I done. I froze with ...

So, first off, hello because I'm from the south. So, before we do anything, we have to speak first. That's like a rule, right. So, hey. Now, before we get started, I have a question. Has anyone ever heard of epilepsy in here.Okay. Has anyone ever thought that it may be more than seizures. Okay, cool. Now, today we're going to tell some stories and talk about some things. But before we even get to that, I just want you to breathe because it's going to be more than a story. It's going to be the truth. And that t ...

3 2 1 5 seconds. 5 seconds is all it takes to make a snap judgement. In just five seconds, you've already formed an opinion about me, about my looks, my voice, the way I stand. In five seconds, you've noticed my flaws, my insecurities, or at least what you assume they are.5 seconds can shape someone's day. 5 seconds can lift someone up or tear them down. 5 seconds is the difference between reaching out and turning away. What you do in those five seconds can matter more than you could ever know. Now, imagine ...

Heat. Heat. What if I mess up completely. What if my voice cracks. What if I forget everything I'd practiced for weeks and just stand here like a deer in headlights. Actually, you know what. Scratch that. What if I don't mess up. What if I nail this perfectly, hit every point, get a standing ovation, and yet feel absolutely nothing. Because that's the scarier question, isn't it.Right now, a part of me is floating somewhere around the back of this room, watching this nervous kid on the podium and thinking, "Wh ...

TEDx Talks· 2025-11-17 17:56
Hey, [Music] hey, [Music] hey, [Applause] I can't count the number of times someone close to me has asked, "How are you. " And I just go, "I'm fine. " when really I'm not fine. We ask people about their mental health every single day, but it's just scripted chatter to keep our conversations warm. When I say I don't want to talk about it, what I really mean is I'm worried that my vulnerability will be met with judgment. Or on the other side of the problem, if someone is dealing with something I don't know mu ...

TEDx Talks· 2025-11-17 16:18
That was just 8 seconds of your time. Short, I know. But did you know that 8 seconds is the average attention span for Gen Z.For baby boomers, it's 20. And for millennials, it's 12. Now, I'm sure we all have an idea on what to blame for this dramatic decrease that happened in only 66 years.Technology, addiction, and consumable media, better known as our culprit. Let me take you back to three summers ago. All my friends had phones, and I wanted to be included. So, as any kid would, I begged my parents for one ...

Designing a Life of Happiness for Black Women | Tiffany McIntyre | TEDxTowsonU
TEDx Talks· 2025-11-11 17:24
Burnout Definition and Impact - The American Psychological Association defines burnout as mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion, often with decreased motivation and lowered performance [3] - Burnout can lead to internal shame, especially for Black women due to societal expectations of strength and resilience [4][5] - Suppressing emotions, though praised, increases the risk of mental and physical health conditions like high-functioning depression, anxiety, gastrointestinal issues, heart problems, and migraines [15][16] The "Strong Black Woman" Schema - Black women face intersecting pressures that decrease their experience with happiness and joy [7] - The "strong black woman" schema describes Black women as resilient, avoiding vulnerability, self-sufficient, and in service to others, which can be exhausting [10][11] - This expectation can lead to suffering being seen as a badge of honor, distorting experiences with happiness [11] Recovery and Self-Care - Addressing burnout involves honesty, self-care, and recognizing the need for help [8] - The most radical act for Black women is to care for themselves fully and unapologetically [20] - Resisting the myth that strength means self-abandonment and choosing self-care are crucial [21]
