Group 1 - The first batch of graduates from Zhejiang Province's first undergraduate program in home economics has been quickly recruited by multiple home service agencies, indicating a strong demand for high-quality talent in the home service market amidst a challenging employment landscape [1] - The home service industry has traditionally been viewed as a low-threshold profession, primarily occupied by middle-aged women performing cleaning and caregiving tasks. However, the sector is evolving with the emergence of specialized services such as maternal and infant care, child education, elderly care, professional cooking, and organization, necessitating skilled professionals to meet modern family needs [1][2] - There is a current labor shortage of 20 million workers in China's home service industry, particularly a lack of high-quality, specialized talent. The rise of home economics as a major reflects higher education's proactive response to societal needs [2] Group 2 - The Ministry of Education encourages universities to establish programs in home economics and geriatric medicine, aiming to integrate higher education with industry needs. This initiative provides new career paths for students and helps alleviate employment pressure for graduates [2] - Despite progress, some occupational biases persist, necessitating the development of a systematic education and training framework to enhance the professional development and job security of home service workers, including older individuals in basic roles [2][3] - Universities are urged to update home economics curricula and enhance practical training to improve students' skills and confidence, while also fostering interdisciplinary innovation to meet market demands and avoid trends that lead to obsolescence [3]
