Yang Shi Wang· 2025-09-22 23:28

Core Viewpoint - The article highlights the successful reintroduction of the critically endangered species, the large-flowered stone butterfly, into its natural habitat in Yunnan, China, showcasing China's commitment to biodiversity conservation and the innovative approaches taken in species protection efforts [1][2][10]. Group 1: Species Conservation Efforts - The large-flowered stone butterfly was rediscovered by Chinese researchers in 2021 after being considered "lost" for over a century, leading to breakthrough cultivation in laboratories [2][3]. - The reintroduction of the species involved careful planting of seedlings into their native soil, demonstrating a significant step in the conservation of endangered species [1][12]. - The Southwest China Wild Biological Germplasm Resource Bank has become a critical support system for the conservation efforts, housing a vast collection of rare and endangered plant seeds [2][3]. Group 2: Germplasm Resource Bank - The Southwest China Wild Biological Germplasm Resource Bank is the only national-level facility of its kind in the country, preserving 27,000 species and 330,000 samples of wild biological germplasm, making it the largest in Asia [2][3]. - The resource bank has achieved international leading levels in the long-term preservation of various wild plant seeds, plant tissues, DNA, fungi, and microorganisms [3]. Group 3: Technological and Community Engagement - The conservation efforts are supported by advanced technologies, including genetic diversity analysis and innovative breeding techniques, which have led to the successful cultivation of hundreds of seedlings of the large-flowered stone butterfly [2][10]. - Community involvement has shifted from hunting to conservation practices, contributing to the overall success of biodiversity initiatives in the region [8].
