Would you hang an Xbox 360 from your Christmas tree? #todayimtoyingwith
The Verge· 2025-10-23 17:40
Today I'm toying with a tiny Xbox 360 because it's the latest Christmas ornament from Hallmark that celebrates a video game console. I really love this Sega Genesis I got back in 2022 that plays the classic Sonic theme. This one celebrates Microsoft Xbox 360, of course, and it's got that sound. And as I understand it, a little bit of Halo 3. The controller is permanently attached to the console. It's got its nice little rubber nubs on there, even though it's made of plastic. Can't quite make out the legends o ...

游戏机涨价,全是芯片惹的祸?
半导体芯闻· 2025-05-06 11:08
Core Viewpoint - The gaming console market is experiencing a significant shift, with prices increasing rather than decreasing, which contradicts historical trends where prices typically drop over time [2][9]. Price Trends - The last major price drop for gaming consoles occurred in 2016 with the PS4 Slim, which saw a price reduction from $349 to $299 [2]. - Recent price increases include the OLED version of the Nintendo Switch, which rose by $50, and the PS5's digital version, which also increased by $50 in 2023 [2]. - Xbox Series S and X saw price hikes of $80 to $100 without any hardware improvements [2]. Factors Influencing Price Increases - Multiple factors contribute to the rising prices, including inflation, supply shortages during the pandemic, unpredictable trade policies, and a shift away from the traditional model of selling hardware at a loss [2]. - A core technical reason for the price increases is the slowdown of Moore's Law, which has historically driven down costs through advancements in chip manufacturing [2][3]. Moore's Law and Its Implications - Moore's Law, proposed by Gordon Moore, suggests that the number of transistors on a chip doubles approximately every two years, but this trend is slowing down [3]. - The slowdown in chip manufacturing advancements has led to increased costs and reduced benefits from die shrink technologies, which previously allowed for smaller, more efficient chips [3][4]. Impact on Gaming Consoles - The benefits of die shrink in gaming consoles have diminished, leading to less significant improvements in size, power consumption, and heat generation [5][6]. - Historical examples, such as the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360, illustrate how die shrink technology previously allowed for lower prices and improved performance, but this trend is no longer evident in the latest console generations [6][7]. Future Outlook - The gaming console market may not revert to historical pricing trends, and future price reductions are uncertain, depending on global trade agreements and advancements in manufacturing processes [8]. - The expectation is that the current trend of rising prices and stagnant technological improvements will continue, leading to a shift in consumer purchasing behavior [9].
又一个芯片架构,走向消亡?
半导体行业观察· 2025-04-02 01:04
Core Viewpoint - The article discusses the ambitious vision behind the development of the Cell processor by Sony, IBM, and Toshiba, highlighting its potential to revolutionize computing architecture and its eventual shortcomings in the market [1][3][21]. Group 1: Development of Cell Processor - In 2000, Sony, IBM, and Toshiba announced a collaboration to develop the Cell processor, aiming for a computing architecture that could achieve unprecedented performance levels, targeting 1 trillion floating-point operations per second [3][4]. - IBM committed to investing $400 million to establish design centers and manufacturing facilities for the Cell processor, while Sony and Toshiba contributed their respective technologies [4]. - The Cell processor was designed to integrate multiple computing units on a single chip, with the goal of creating a highly parallel computing environment [4][5]. Group 2: Technical Specifications - The Cell processor features a 64-bit PowerPC core (PPE) and up to 32 synergistic processing elements (SPEs), achieving peak performance of 1 TFLOPS in its initial prototype [11][12]. - The architecture includes a unique memory structure where SPEs cannot directly access system memory, requiring explicit data management, which increases programming complexity but enhances efficiency [9][12]. - The interconnect bus (EIB) allows for high bandwidth communication between processing units, crucial for maximizing the processor's performance [9]. Group 3: Market Performance and Challenges - Despite its theoretical performance, the Cell processor faced significant challenges in mass production due to high power consumption and complex architecture, leading to a reduced number of SPEs in the final version [11][12]. - The PlayStation 3, which utilized the Cell processor, struggled in the market due to its high manufacturing costs and the difficulty developers faced in optimizing games for its architecture [13][14]. - Competing products, such as Microsoft's Xbox 360, offered simpler architectures that were easier for developers to work with, further hindering the PS3's market performance [13][14]. Group 4: Legacy and Conclusion - Although the Cell processor did not achieve mainstream success in gaming, it found applications in high-performance computing, notably in the Roadrunner supercomputer, which was the first to exceed 1 PetaFLOPS [16][18]. - The innovative design of the Cell processor influenced future computing architectures, particularly in parallel processing and GPU computing [21]. - By 2012, IBM officially discontinued support for the Cell architecture, marking the end of an era for a processor that had once held great promise [19].
